Mason
Pulling into Paigeâs driveway, my fingers ache from how tight Iâve been holding the steering wheel. The underside of my skin is crawling, and my hackles are up. Every time I feel like our friendship is back where it belongs, something sets her off again and she retreats into her shell.
I love everything there is to like about Paige, but this habit of running whenever sheâs upset is starting to fuck me off.
But then, I keep on fucking chasing her. Maybe Iâm part of the problem? Still, Iâll never stop.
âWhoa! Whoa!â I practically yell, as I get out of my truck and find her coming out of her house. âWhat the hell are you doing?â Iâm freaking out because thereâs a fucking suitcase in her hand and a look of fury on her face. I donât even understand what I did. We were all chill and talking shit at the bakery, then that chick whoâs name I canât even remember turned up and it all went to shit. Bridge went white as a ghost and then ran out of there like her ass was on fire.
âIâm leaving, Mason. What does it look like Iâm doing?â Mason?
âLeaving? The fuck why?â I move so Iâm blocking her from going to her car. Now Iâm regretting parking next to her instead of behind her.
She tries to sidestep me twice then sighs when I move with her, her shoulders slumping as she stops and finally looks at me. Itâs then I see her blotchy cheeks and red-rimmed blue eyes. âIâm in the way, Mase. The fact youâre here chasing after me instead of talking to Grace like the mountain wants you to is evidence enough.â
âEvidence? Bridge, I donât give a flying fuck about the mountainâs call. How many times do I have to say that to you? I just care about you, my friendâmy best friend.â
Rolling her eyes slightly, she shakes her head and pulls out her keys. âAnd thatâs exactly why I need to leave. I have to be the bigger person and step aside so you can follow your path, just like Julia Roberts did in the movie we watched the other night.â
I frown to the point where I think my brows merge in the middle. âIs that why you had me sit through that? To try to make me see how itâs gonna be?â Is she going to go off with some good looking gay guy and have him as a new best friend while she finds a career in another city? Like fuck Iâm gonna stand by and watch myself be replaced as number one bestie âWhat about the bakery? What about me? And Miller, and Huxley? Youâre part of the group.â
âGod. You can be so damn clueless sometimes, Mase.â She steps to the side and readies her keys, but Iâm not about to let her take off again, so I snatch them from her hand before she can beep the locks. âHey!â
âYou donât get to run away from this,â I growl.
